United Nations Ends Sanctions on Syria's Leader Before White House Visit

Security Council representatives gave the green light to a United States-backed measure removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria ahead of his Washington trip the following week.

Sharaa was named provisional head of state subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that removed the former president in December 2024, ending thirteen long years of internal conflict.

America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a new era" following Assad's ouster.

Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions while commanding the Muslim faction the HTS movement, once connected to the terrorist network. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups during July.

More Penalties Removed

Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of the penalties, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation toward America and allied countries for their support the country and its population."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" working toward stability to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Following their discussion, the US president stated Sharaa possessed "a genuine opportunity at pulling it together".

The two leaders convened on their first occasion in May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through the region.

After that meeting, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".

His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria until he severed ties during 2016.

Prior United States Journey

Monday's visit will not be his initial visit to America this year. During September, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the UN General Assembly in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.

Throughout his presentation, he said Syria was "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
