Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy States Preparedness for Conflict-Time Polls After Remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy has announced he is willing to conduct a presidential election during the current war, if the Verkhovna Rada and international allies approve. This statement follows accusations from Donald Trump that he was clinging to power.

Obviously irritated by the intervention from abroad, Zelenskyy underscored that "This is a matter for the citizens of Ukraine, rather than for individuals from other nations, with all necessary respect to our partners."

However, he vowed to investigate options for holding a election in the coming months. "Given that this question is now being raised by the President of the United States, our key partner, I will respond succinctly: look, I am ready for elections," Zelenskyy said on Tuesday night.

"Moreover, I am calling on ... the United States to help me, possibly in conjunction with European partners, to provide protection for the vote, and then within the following 60-90 day period Ukraine will be ready to conduct the elections. I individually have the will and preparedness for this," he continued.

Trump's Criticism and The Country's Legal Situation

The comments were made by Trump in a rambling interview published by Politico earlier on Tuesday. "They have not held an election in a considerable period," claimed the U.S. president. "Consider this, they claim to be a democracy, but it becomes a situation where it's not a democracy any more."

Zelenskyy's presidential term officially ended in May of last year, but the nation's constitution bans elections during martial law. Furthermore, his political opponents have consistently argued that security and political considerations do not permit organizing an election amid the ongoing conflict.

"Holding a vote would only be detrimental," said Serhiy Rakhmanin. "He's the commander-in-chief, and the country is in a situation where we lack that option, regardless of issues we might have with him. It would only benefit the opponent," he concluded.

Logistical and Legal Obstacles

Zelenskyy highlighted two key issues that must be resolved: the logistical issue of enabling military personnel, millions of internally displaced persons, and those living under occupation to participate, and additionally, how to constitutionally hold elections when martial law is in effect.

He requested guidance from partner nations on securing the elections, and from MPs on how to modify the constitution to permit a election. "{I am awaiting ideas from partners, I am awaiting suggestions from our parliamentarians, and I am prepared to proceed with the elections," stated Zelenskyy.

Wider Political Background

Zelenskyy was speaking while returning to Ukraine after wrapping up a series of visits to several European capitals. This occurs while the White House has reportedly been pushing on Kyiv to agree to a ceasefire agreement.

Recently, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., suggested at a forum that Zelenskyy was dragging out the war due to worries of losing power. He also suggested that his father might "disengage" from Ukraine if the conflict continues. "{It's not correct. But it's not exactly wrong," said Trump, when asked about his son's claim.

There are indications that the U.S. has floated the idea Ukraine should relinquish the Donbas region to achieve peace, a concession that would be extremely rejected within Ukraine. Additionally, there is currently no sign that Russia is willing to agree to any agreement, including one that might seem advantageous to Moscow.
