Typhoon Matmo made landfall on the coastal regions of China on the weekend, shortly after sweeping across the provincial island of Hainan. The severe weather forced the relocation of approximately 350,000 people, delivering torrential rain and destructive gusts, especially between Wuchuan in Guangdong and Wenchang in Hainan. Boat transport were suspended and air travel disrupted at the airport in Haikou.
Matmo, the 21st typhoon of the year, had sustained wind speeds of 94mph and poured over 50mm of rainfall in six hours in Chongzou and Qinzhou. Urban areas of Nanning also experienced significant rain amounts.
Matmo triggered China's highest-level red alert, with disruptions in the city, where commercial activities, transportation systems and highways were shut. In the special administrative region, numerous air services were affected and dozens called off.
As Matmo moves inland towards the provincial area in the neighboring country, it is projected to weaken into a less intense system with 89km/h winds but will continue to bring substantial precipitation. Vietnam's northern regions could experience 130-150mm on the following day, raising the risk of flooding and mudslides. The weather pattern is anticipated to move towards Yunnan region in China, where further heavy rainfall is likely.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Priscilla formed off Mexico's Pacific coast on Saturday night, first as a storm system. It led to a storm watch for the southwestern areas from Punta San Telmo to another location on Monday.
In the early hours of the next day, Priscilla was about 491 kilometers from a Mexican cape with continuous gusts of 65mph. It intensified into a severe cyclone in the evening, when sustained winds reached at 121km/h.
Though not expected to make landfall, the storm is likely to produce dangerous waves and rip currents as it tracks north-west along the coast towards Baja California Sur. Substantial rain is forecast on the coming day, amounting to 100-150mm in specific Mexican states, with local totals at about 200mm. Colima and western Jalisco could face moderate to heavy rain.
Elsewhere, a cyclone named Shakhti has developed as the first post-monsoon cyclonic storm of 2025 in the Arabian Sea, causing an warning from the national weather agency for Maharashtra. On that day, the cyclone was 130 miles southeast of Ras al Hadd, Oman with peak wind speeds of 64mph.
Shakhti, which has tracked south-westward and weakened, is predicted to recurve towards the east into the Arabian Sea. Rough seas are expected to continue along the coastal stretch and heavy rainfall is anticipated in coastal districts including specific Indian cities.
