Flight operations have restarted at Edinburgh Airport after a significant ATC system failure halted all operations.

All aircraft movements were halted because of an systems problem that occurred at about 08:30.

Several flyers found themselves stranded in planes on the runway while the issue persisted.

Operations Restart with Residual Impact

A statement indicated at 10:40 that services were back online, and thanked passengers for their "understanding and cooperation".

Nonetheless, significant disruption are expected to affect schedules. Services bound for London Gatwick, Bristol, Amsterdam and Frankfurt have been axed, with a host of additional flights experiencing delays.

Officials had earlier anticipated that dozens of flights could be affected.

"Passengers are advised to contact their airlines for the latest information on their booked journeys," the statement added.

Source of the Issue

The airport attributed the operational halt to an IT issue with its air traffic control provider.

Flyers should still plan to check the status of their trip before departing to the terminal as knock-on effects are worked through.
