Federal agents have arrived in Charlotte as part of President Donald Trump's expanding crackdown on unauthorized immigration, according to government announcements.
The campaign, named "Charlotte's Web Operation", was announced on recently, with representatives stating that "illegal immigrants with criminal records" would be primary subjects in the city.
"Federal authorities are sending Homeland Security personnel to the city to protect American citizens and public safety threats are removed," government authorities announced.
Local officials, including Charlotte's mayor, issued a joint statement criticising the initiative, saying it was causing "unwarranted anxiety and confusion" in the community.
Specialized transport and special operations teams could be participating in the North Charlotte operation, according to official records.
A group from a local church performing maintenance at a eastern Charlotte church escaped to nearby forest when agents arrived, with one man being detained, according to witness statements.
"We assumed the religious facility was protected and we would be undisturbed," a 15-year-old witness told reporters.
Since Trump's return to office, national forces have been dispatched to various urban centers including Washington DC, Los Angeles and Chicago to implement the pledge of "the biggest immigration enforcement effort" in US history.
The federal agency said they are conducting the campaign because the state has not complied with the nearly 1,400 Immigration and Customs Enforcement individuals in custody, meaning they had been freed due to "sanctuary policies".
The city is not a immigration haven - municipalities that have regulations in place to limit the assistance given to federal immigration authorities - but it is a "officially recognized inclusive community". This is a official classification for cities that are committed to diversity acceptance.
"The administration and its leadership will intervene to defend the public when municipal leaders refuse," authorities stated.
The city is an demographically mixed city, with about 17% of residents being immigrants, according to population statistics.
Government agencies has not revealed how long the raids will last. Windy City enforcement, which started last fall is persisting.
Earlier in the week, US Representative and Democrat, Alma Adams said she was notified about the initiative and was "seriously troubled" about federal officers coming to this region.
The subsequent location on Trump's list is set to be the Louisiana city, according to information, and that as many as two hundred officers could be dispatched to the location.
Campaigns in other municipalities like large metropolitan areas have come under fire over allegations of overly aggressive tactics.
