An extensive web outage has affected dozens sites and applications globally, and users reporting problems accessing the internet due to difficulties at Amazonâs web hosting system.
The impacted platforms comprise the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to a host of Amazon-owned operations like its main retail website and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.
Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was affected along with its subsidiaries Halifax and the Scottish bank, with further notifications of problems accessing the HM Revenue and Customs site on that morning. Also in the UK, multiple Ring users turned to social media to report their security devices were not working.
In the UK alone, accounts of disruptions on specific apps reached the many thousands for each app.
Amazon reported that the issue started in the Atlantic coast of the America at AWS, a division that offers vital internet infrastructure for many companies, who rent out space on Amazon servers. Amazon Web Services is the worldâs largest online services system.
Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), officials reported âincreased problem frequencies and slowdownsâ for AWS services in a region on the eastern US of the United States. The widespread consequence appeared to hit apps around the world, and the problem monitoring service showing problems with the identical platforms in multiple continents.
The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that reports on internet outages, further indicated a surge in outages on the start of the week, and numerous instances situated in the Virginia area, the region of Amazonâs US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the problems started.
