Alphabet, Google's holding company Alphabet Inc. plans to commit $15bn to build an AI computing facility in southern India's Andhra Pradesh state.
The infrastructure, that is planned in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam city, is set to become a component of Google's international system of AI centers located in 12 countries.
"It's the largest AI hub that we are committing funds to anywhere in the world, apart from the United States," the CEO of Google Cloud stated at an event in capital Delhi recently, noting that the investment will be spread over the next five years.
The announcement occurs when American President Donald Trump has been asking US firms to focus on local funding.
India has risen as a prime location for AI data centres. The nation's inexpensive data services and rapidly growing digital audience have established it as a focal point for expansion of cloud and artificial intelligence for technology leaders.
"The facility will deliver our industry-leading technology to businesses and consumers in the nation, speeding up AI innovation and driving growth throughout the nation," stated Alphabet's chief executive Sundar Pichai.
A formal agreement to finalise the initiative is set to be signed this Tuesday, the Andhra Pradesh government confirmed.
"It is a significant advancement for our state's technological advancement, technological innovation, and international reputation," remarked the minister for technology Minister Nara Lokesh.
The project will integrate computing and artificial intelligence facilities with sustainable power solutions and an enhanced optical fiber network.
The project is part of the local administration's blueprint to create 6 gigawatts of data centre capacity by 2029.
Data centers are tangible infrastructures that contain the computer and network hardware that entities use to accumulate, handle, retain, and circulate data.
They contain servers, storage systems and networking hardware like network routers and security firewalls, along with the essential electricity and temperature control systems to function properly.
Across Andhra Pradesh, the local administration has been offering discounted land and electricity to draw worldwide funders.
India's data centre industry has grown rapidly in the recent half-decade, surpassing the 1GW capacity mark in 2024 and approximately tripling its capability from 2019.
