A brave railway staff member who intervened to save passengers during a multiple knife attack on a express train has sustained life-threatening wounds, authorities stated on Sunday.
CCTV footage reportedly depicts the staff member attempting to halt the assailant as the train traveled between a city and another station in the county. Witnesses recounted a terrifying 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with bloodied victims running through compartments.
The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in custody for interrogation. Police announced a significant event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several people have now been discharged from medical care.
A bystander recorded the individual brandishing a big knife and being subdued with a stun device as he confronted police on the platform. He was reportedly heard yelling, "Kill me, end my life."
âThis awful event has created broad consequences. We are thinking of the victims and their families â particularly the brave employee of rail staff whose family are being supported by specialist officers,â stated a high-ranking police official.
Rail unions were swift to commend employees and demand increased measures. One union leader stated he would be ârequesting immediate meetings with authorities, rail employers and law enforcement to ensure that we have the strongest possible assistance, resources and effective procedures in operationâ.
Another union representative urged the rail company and government âto move quickly to examine security, to support the impacted workers, and to make sure nothing like this occurs againâ.
The operator who halted the train at Huntingdon was reported as being âvery shakenâ but âgoodâ, and has been praised by association representatives for doing âexactly the right thingâ.
âThe driver didnât stop the service in the center of two stops where itâs clearly difficult for the first responders to reach, but he carried on traveling until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost already there,â explained a association representative.
Police stated they got the first emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An observer described at first wondering if the situation was a holiday prank, but soon realized from individuals' faces that it was serious.
Police have stated there is nothing to suggest the incident was a terror-related incident and have asked the public to come forward with any further information.
Rail operations on the impacted line are expected to have delays until Monday, with passengers advised to postpone their travel where feasible.
Anyone with information that could assist the inquiry are asked to reach police by texting a specific number with a reference code.
