On Friday, Pam Bondi appointed Jay Clayton to lead an investigation into political adversaries of Donald Trump and their relationships with the late financier. This action came shortly after Trump instructed her to launch the probe.
In a statement, the Attorney General praised Clayton as “among the nation’s top prosecutors”. The official added, “This case will be addressed with speed and honesty to ensure public transparency.”
This development seems to diverge from a recent memorandum from federal authorities which stated that documents related to Epstein did not warrant further inquiries. As per the document, authorities “found no proof justifying probes into uncharged individuals”
The announcement comes as growing pressure from the president on congressional Republicans to resist the full release of Epstein-related documents ahead of an key congressional decision next week. Many Republicans are anticipated to support the release.
Newly public communications from Epstein have brought attention to Trump’s previous connections with the convicted criminal, revealing details that he was more aware of Epstein’s actions than earlier acknowledged.
That same day, Trump announced he would ask the DOJ to investigate Epstein’s ties with Democrats, including prominent individuals such as Clinton, Summers, and Hoffman. Interestingly, he also referred to the “Epstein situation” as a “scam”.
Additional developments included calls to safeguard public lands, objections of an antisemitism watchdog, and a judge’s decision for a resolution in the Purdue Pharma lawsuit.
